Welcome to the latest edition of the InfoBlog!  I hope you enjoy reading about all the patent, IP, science, and technical information company and system insights in this edition. Highlights include the acquisition by Dennemeyer of Octimine Technologies in October 2018. Companies providing IP services continue to consolidate to provide the full suite of IP management tools and bringing patent search and analysis software for their customers. Reformatting of its biomedical databases for data sciences brings Elsevier towards the pharma/ biotech R&D scientists directly. Read more in this edition of the information industry news which  includes stories I found interesting published in November and December 2018. The blog follows the usual format starting with content, search, analysis industry tools, and finishing with company news.  The first 2019 edition will follow very shortly.

Section I: Patent, scientific and legal information: content, search tools and analytics

Content

EBSCO a multi-database host, recently acquired the Linguistics Abstracts Online database from Wiley. Linguistics Abstract Online is a bibliographic database providing indexing and abstracts from 800 linguistics and language study journals from 1911 onwards.

Search
Entellect, a new platform announced by Elsevier, presents the biomedical databases Embase, Reaxys and Pharmapendium and their ontologies in a single environment where additional content, such as electronic lab note books can be added. Entellect is for data scientists in the biotech industry. Minesoft enhanced its PatBase Analytics V2 platform with a new patent citation analysis module. Users can create visualisations that show an overview of citations by company, year and filing location, it is also possible to drill down to the actual citations for deeper analysis.  The precision of MARPAT® answer sets just improved on STN, the MARPAT search algorithm is also being improved and comprehensiveness is retained effective on all three versions - STNext®, STN Express® and STN® on the WebSM . MARPAT is the CAS database of Markush structures.

User Interface

Ambercite Ai release 4.2 introduced a ‘share results’ button to enable faster review of results by a team. The interactive tool has filters. PatSeer also introduced a faster results-reviewer with the ‘Standard+Kwic Results View’.


Academic Publishing Process

Elsevier, as part of its open science initiative has acquired Science-Metrix Inc., a research evaluation company that provides research evaluation and analytics to assess science and technology activities. At the same time it also acquired 1science. 1science was founded in 2015 to provide direct access to peer reviewed scientific articles it now has three products 1foldr, and 1figr, along the original 1findr. 1findr contains 90 million records of which 27 million are open access articles. Springer Nature and Publons, announced a partnership in December. As part of the initiative the Publons’ Reviewer Recognition Service will be used by 2,000 Springer Nature journals, starting with Scientific Reports an open access journal.   Springer Nature and Publons also plan to collaborate to make it easier for editors to find an appropriate expert to conduct peer reviews. Publons was founded in 2013 and is now owned by Clarivate Analytics.  


Section II: IP management

IdeaPoint launched version 5.0 of its innovation management software introducing ‘Mobile Scout’ for managing technology scouting data and innovation capture around business partnerships and research collaborations. IdeaPoint is owned by Anaqua. Anaqua has acquired five companies since 2015 including ideaPoint, AcclaimIP, and Lecorpio. LexisNexis introduced a mobile app -  PCLaw Go. PCLaw Go enables users to track and enter time associated with cases and matters directly to PCLaw through the mobile app. The new software automates data entry and thus brings more accurate and faster billing, and accounting.   Minesoft launched PatDocs – a new IP legal automation tool which facilitates family tree mapping, filing US prosecution requirements such as IDS. Information can be shared with others allowing legal IP professionals to work with industry clients.

 

IPO office news

The EPO remembered the publication of the first EP patent application in December 40 years ago.- EP0000001 was filed by the European Atomic Energy Community for a thermal heat pump. Looking forward, the EPO held a conference on Blockchain technology, exploring patenting activity, and potential of blockchain for the IP industry itself. A report ‘Patenting Blockchain’ is available The IPI (Swiss patent office) has been providing patent and trade mark searches for over thirty years. Since 2003 under the name of ip-search. Over 50 specialists work at ip-search and over the years have provided at least 10,000 searches for their industry customers. The JPO (Japan Patent Office) carried out the semi-annual update of its FI classification scheme. The classification is revised twice a year in April and November. WIPO added six national patent collections to its Patentscope database in 2018.  

 

Section III: Company news, M&A, People news

Dennemeyer Group announced the acquisition of Octimine Technologies GmbH.   Octimine was founded in 2015 by researchers from the Max Planck Institute and LMU Munich who created an artificial intelligence (AI) style (AI basis - semantic text analytics and machine learning methods) engine for patent search and analysis. Linguamatics is now an official Amazon Web Services (AWS) Technology Partner. Linguamatics already utilizes AWS to provide access to I2E OnDemand, iScite, and for clients to host their own private data clouds.
